Artist / Tung Cheuk Yan, Cherry

Cheuk Yan Cherry Tung is a Hong Kong-born painter currently based in Chicago, USA. She received her Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2023 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2020.
Her artistic style is characterized by a unique blend of tradition and innovation, reflecting her perspective and emotions as a contemporary Chinese-American artist. Living in the United States has deepened her connection to her Chinese identity and heightened her cultural awareness. Tung's choice of Chinese gongbi painting as her primary medium is driven by her appreciation for its delicate, intricate, and pure qualities. Through her observations of plants and animals in everyday life, she skillfully conveys deep emotions through light and shadow, using imagery and color to create dreamy and nuanced atmospheres. This fusion of Eastern and Western visual language not only enriches her work but also serves as a means to cope with feelings of homesickness.
In terms of recognition, Tung was awarded the New Artist Development Grant by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council in 2024, as well as the Luminarts Visual Arts Award and James Nelson Raymond Scholarship in 2023. Her artwork has been showcased in various venues in Hong Kong and the United States, including Touch Gallery and the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre in Hong Kong, as well as Union League Club Chicago, CSI Project Space, Art Clvb, Confluence Gallery, Art Pie Gallery, SAIC Gallery, Ruschman Gallery, and the John David Mooney Foundation in the US.
