Un-“Conventional” Calligraphy: Characters at Play
2025.12.31 - 2026.01.30
Exhibition Statement
Looking back on decades in the world of ink and brush, I have increasingly come to appreciate the beauty of small and delicate in recent years—a realization that while the strokes may be simple, their meaning is infinite; and though the characters may be sparse, they are complete in the mind’s eye. This exhibition centers on “small-character” calligraphy, complemented by small regular script, as a deep dialogue between traditional heritage and modern visual expression. It is also my artistic exploration, as a calligrapher, of returning to the source of the heart.
Small-character calligraphy is where true skill shines through: the calligrapher must be able to balance composition, brushwork, ink resonance, line quality, structure, spacing, and emotional expression. Every dot and stroke is a response to the meaning of the character, and the literary intent of the work must harmonize with its expressive form, striving to achieve “perfection”. At the same time, calligraphy is a dialogue between the calligrapher and their own emotions—so what the viewer sees is not only the beauty of the form but also an image of the inner state.
The path of calligraphy has always emphasized the spirit carried in the ink and the state of mind it reflects. In this, the path of small regular script best reveals a person’s calmness. Fine yet steady brushwork requires tranquility, restraint, and reflection—it leaves no room for restlessness. I have practiced small regular script for decades, actively participating in the Hong Kong Art Biennial and national calligraphy competitions, and have received many awards. My work 《天人合一》(translated as "Unity of Heaven and Man" ) has been collected by Princeton University in the United States, and the《矛與盾》(translated as "Spear and Shield" ) series was supported by a project grant from the National Arts Fund. Looking back now, with a loyal heart and clear spirit, I find peace in this journey.
May viewers, upon entering the exhibition space, slow their thoughts and meet each character like a friend. Whether passionate as fire or clear as water, they all flow from the most genuine part of my heart. If one can glimpse the energy of the world or grasp a reflection of life in a single character, then the purpose of this exhibition will have been fulfilled.
